Graphene in Functional Building Materials

ZnoNova Materials

Construction is where graphene marketing has been at its loosest, so this page is deliberately narrow. We supply a characterised waterborne dispersion. Below is where it plausibly helps, and the three things we are not going to claim.

The material

FormWaterborne acrylic dispersion, graphene 5% / resin 22.5%, dilutable
Layers / lateral size5–8 layers · 3–6 µm
BET500–700 m²/g
VerificationRaman D 1348.6 / G 1578.5 / 2D 2713.2 cm⁻¹, SEM supplied
Compliance / packagingRoHS · 1 kg bottle or 20 kg drum

Where it plausibly helps

Barrier in protective coatingsThe tortuous-path mechanism is geometric and real, which is why anticorrosion is the best-founded construction-adjacent use.
Antistatic and conductive floorsWhere a black finish is acceptable and a conductive network is wanted without humidity dependence.
Thermal spreading layersIn-plane conduction in a coating or a laminate rather than through-thickness insulation.
Functional surface treatmentsWhere the substrate can be dark and the coating is doing more than decoration.

The three claims we will not make

What to establish before specifying

Colour is usually the first constraint, because the dispersion is black. Then adhesion and weathering on your substrate, the add-on needed to reach a functional network if conduction is the goal, and compatibility with the rest of your coating system. We publish the material characterisation; performance of a finished coating is established by your testing, and we will not pre-empt it with a number that would not transfer.

Questions buyers ask

Does a graphene coating insulate a building?

No, and we will not say it does. Graphene conducts heat well; it spreads heat rather than blocking it. If you need insulation, this is the wrong material class.

Can we add it to concrete?

Not this product. It is a waterborne acrylic dispersion designed for coatings. Cementitious systems are a different dispersion problem and would need a different product.

What colour is it?

Black. That is usually the first thing that decides whether a construction application is viable.

How do we verify it is graphene and not graphite?

Raman spectrum, BET of 500-700 m2/g and SEM, all supplied with the sample. Graphite does not reach that surface area.
