The smell is not dirt — it is chemistry
Pet owners describe the problem as "the bed smells even after I wash it". That is the key clue: if washing fixed it, it would be dirt. It is not. Odor in pet textiles is produced by a chain of events that happens inside the fibre:
How pet odor is actually made
- Residues soak in. Sebum (skin oil), saliva, dander and — in beds and pads — urine residues migrate into the fibre and into foam cores.
- Bacteria feed on them. A warm, humid, protein-rich textile is an ideal growth medium.
- The by-products are the smell. Bacterial breakdown of urea and proteins releases ammonia — the dominant note in pet odor — together with sulphur compounds and short-chain fatty acids.
Why washing does not solve it

That last row is the trap. Many "antibacterial" pet textiles are surface-finished — the active agent is sprayed or padded onto finished cloth. It works on day one, and it leaves with the laundry. The customer who washes the bed most often — the conscientious owner — is the one whose product fails fastest.
Two levers actually work, and you need both

Most products on the market do one of these and market it as if it were both. For pet products — where ammonia is the core complaint — a material that only claims "antibacterial" is answering half the question.
The third lever nobody talks about: durability
Even a material that does both is useless if the function leaves in the wash. This is decided by how the function got into the textile:

What to ask before you believe any odor claim
Four questions that separate real from marketing
- Which molecule was tested? "Deodorizing" is meaningless without a target. For pet products the answer must include ammonia.
- Which body tested it, and what is the report number? A percentage with no report behind it is a slogan.
- Pre-treatment or post-treatment? This single answer predicts whether the product still works after 30 washes.
- Which strains, at what standard? Antibacterial results depend entirely on strain and method.

Why do pet beds still smell after washing?
Because the odor is produced inside the fibre, not on its surface. What causes the ammonia smell in pet products?
Cat and dog urine is rich in urea. Bacteria in the textile convert urea into ammonia, which is the sharp note owners recognise as pet smell. Because ammonia is the dominant molecule, a material that does not specifically address ammonia will not fix the complaint.
Is antibacterial enough to stop pet odor?
No. Antibacterial treatment suppresses the bacteria that generate odor compounds, but it does not remove odor molecules already present. Deodorization neutralises or breaks down the molecules themselves. Pet products need both, and the deodorization data should name ammonia.
What is the difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment antibacterial fabric?
Post-treatment means the active agent is applied to finished cloth as a surface finish, so it washes off progressively. Pre-treatment means the active is compounded into a masterbatch and spun into the fibre itself, so it stays as part of the fibre and survives repeated laundering.
How can I verify an odor-control claim?
Ask four things: which odor molecule was tested (for pet products it must include ammonia), which laboratory tested it and the report number, whether the technology is pre-treatment or post-treatment, and which bacterial strains were tested under which standard.
