Antimicrobial Fabric for Automotive Interiors

ZnoNova PLATARI

Automotive interior textiles are qualified against requirements most antimicrobial fabrics never encounter: abrasion cycles, light fastness, fogging and VOC limits, and an OEM specification that is not negotiable. An antimicrobial function has to survive all of that without changing the properties the specification is actually about.

Why a surface finish is the wrong answer here

An antimicrobial applied as a topical finish sits in exactly the layer that automotive testing attacks: abrasion, UV exposure and cleaning cycles. It can also interfere with the finishes the interior specification does care about — soil release, flame retardancy, hand.

PLATARI is a pre-treatment: nano platinum, silver and zinc are compounded into masterbatch and spun into the fibre. The function is inside the yarn, so abrasion exposes more of it rather than removing it, and it does not occupy the surface chemistry that the rest of your specification needs.

Where it fits

Seat fabricThe highest-contact surface in the cabin.
Headliner and pillar trimLower contact, but part of cabin odour.
Floor and boot textilesMoisture and soil ingress.
Ride-hailing and fleetWhere cabin turnover per day is the whole reason for the specification.

What we supply and what you qualify

We supplyMasterbatch, yarn or fabric, with SGS antibacterial data and deodorization data
You qualifyAbrasion, light fastness, fogging, VOC and odour panels, flammability, and the OEM's own specification
We do not holdAny automotive qualification. There is no IATF or OEM approval attached to this material and we will not imply one. If your programme requires it, raise it at the start.

We would rather state that limitation in the middle of the page than have it surface at a supplier audit.

Questions buyers ask

Do you have IATF 16949 or an OEM approval?

No, and we will not imply otherwise. We supply the functional material and its test data; automotive qualification sits with the fabric mill and the tier supplier.

Will it affect fogging or VOC results?

The function is compounded into the polymer rather than applied as a surface chemistry, which is generally favourable, but fogging and VOC must be tested on your finished construction. We will not pre-empt your test house.

Does abrasion remove the antimicrobial function?

In-fibre function is distributed through the yarn cross-section, so abrasion exposes fresh material rather than stripping a coating. Establish the retained performance on your own construction and abrasion protocol.

Which form should a tier supplier buy?

Masterbatch if you spin, yarn if you weave or knit, fabric if you want to evaluate quickly before committing upstream.
