Reducing Ammonia and Odour in Animal Housing

Ammonia in a poultry or livestock house is not primarily a nuisance issue. It is a performance issue: elevated ammonia damages respiratory epithelium, depresses feed intake and shows up in your production figures long before anyone complains about the smell. That is why an additive that reduces it is measured in the same conversation as feed conversion, not in the same conversation as air freshener.

Where the ammonia comes from

Almost all of it comes from undigested nitrogen leaving the animal and being converted in the litter by microbial urease. Two levers therefore exist: reduce the nitrogen arriving in the litter, and interfere with its conversion once there. A zinc-based additive works on the second, and litter management works on both.

Read the scope correctly: the 96% figure is a laboratory deodorization test on a treated sample, not a measurement taken inside a working shed with live birds, ventilation and litter. It tells you the mechanism works. It does not tell you what your house will read on a gas meter, because that depends on stocking density, ventilation rate, litter moisture and season.

What housing management still has to do

Litter moistureUrease activity tracks moisture. Wet litter will out-produce any additive.
Ventilation rateEspecially in winter, where minimum ventilation is traded against heating cost.
Stocking densityNitrogen load per square metre is the input to everything else.
Drinker managementLeaking drinkers are the most common cause of a wet-litter ammonia problem.

We would rather say this plainly: a producer whose litter is soaked because of a drinker line will not fix their ammonia with an additive, and selling them one would waste their money and our credibility.

Where it fits alongside the nutrition case

Zinc is a required trace mineral, and the same additive is used for nutritional zinc supply in broiler drinking-water programmes and in antibiotic-free production. Housing air quality is a second effect of a product that is in the ration for another reason, which is usually a better economic argument than buying an odour product on its own.

Questions buyers ask

Will this get my house to a specific ppm?

We cannot promise a ppm figure. The 96% deodorization result is a laboratory test on a sample; in-house ammonia depends on your ventilation, litter moisture, stocking density and season. Anyone quoting you a shed ppm without seeing your shed is guessing.

Is this instead of ventilation?

No. It works alongside housing management, not in place of it. If litter is wet, fix the litter first.

Does it affect the birds?

It is a food-grade, pH-neutral zinc source used as a nutritional additive. Regulatory status in your market is your responsibility and we supply documentation to support it.

Can it be used in swine and cattle housing?

The mechanism is the same. Trial data we hold is strongest in poultry, with a sow and piglet trial also on file. Tell us the species and we will tell you what we actually have rather than generalising.
