What the composite brings that plain nano ZnO does not

Two functions in one addition

  • The carbon phase adds adsorption. Where odour is part of the same complaint — and in most hygiene-adjacent products it is — adsorption addresses the symptom directly while surface activity addresses the cause.
  • One additive instead of two. Dosing a separate adsorbent and a separate functional oxide means managing two dispersions and two cost lines. A composite collapses that into one.
  • The carbon acts as a carrier. Nano oxides tend to agglomerate; a carbon phase can help keep them distributed — which returns to point 2, the failure mode that kills most trials.

In the EU, the Biocidal Products Regulation governs treated articles and specific duties are triggered once a biocidal claim is made about the article. In the US, EPA regulation under FIFRA distinguishes claims that the treatment protects the article itself from public-health claims about protecting people. Deciding the wording early changes what documentation you need — and it is far cheaper than a reprint.

What is a ZnO/activated carbon composite used for as an antibacterial additive?

It is used as a functional filler in coatings, plastics, textiles, paper and nonwoven, where the zinc oxide phase provides surface activity and the carbon phase adds adsorption. Because odour is often part of the same complaint, combining both functions in one addition is the practical advantage over dosing a separate oxide and a separate adsorbent.

Why not just use plain nano zinc oxide?

Plain nano oxides tend to agglomerate, and an additive that agglomerates is inactive where it agglomerated, which is the most common failure in trials. A carbon phase can help keep the oxide distributed and adds adsorption at the same time. Whether the composite outperforms plain ZnO in your specific matrix is exactly what a trial batch is for.

Which matrices can it go into?

Water-based and solvent coatings, plastics and masterbatch, textile coatings or compounded fibre, and paper or nonwoven. Each needs a different grade, because surface treatment, thermal stability, dispersion behaviour and loading limits differ by matrix.

Can I claim my product is antibacterial?

It depends on the market and the exact wording. Do you supply test data for the additive?

Is the additive available in a colour other than black?

No. The carbon phase makes it black, which suits dark or charcoal-themed products and rules it out of white and pale ones. We raise this in the first conversation rather than let it surface during colour matching.
